Make a Difference Day 2023

Make a Difference Day, recognized on the fourth Saturday of October, is the largest day of volunteering in the nation. It’s a great opportunity to get out in your community to serve others. Since we started doing litter cleanups in 2021, this is our third Make a Difference Day, and like the previous two, we are holding litter cleanups over a two day period. On Friday, October 27th and Saturday, October 28th, from 10 am to 12 pm each day, we will be meeting at two spots along Hamilton Avenue in the Historic Inner East neighborhood of Dayton.

Day 1 - Friday, October 27, 2023, 10 am - 12 pm

  • Address: 203 Rott St, Dayton, OH 45403 (corner of Hamilton Ave. and Rott St)

Day 2 - Saturday, October 28, 2023, 10 am - 12 pm

  • Address: Hamilton Ave & Yates St, Dayton, OH 45403

If you follow us, you know that we go back to this area frequently for our litter cleanups. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, Hamilton Avenue, which runs between Linden Ave. and Fifth St., is a main thoroughfare for vehicles based on its proximity to 35 and other East Dayton neighborhoods. It’s impossible to tell how much of the litter that we pick up there is tossed out of cars versus blowing from nearby houses or vacant lots. Either way, with the abandoned railroad track right there (the future Flight Line recreation trail!), litter builds up over time and it’s very noticeable.

The second reason for going back to Hamilton Ave for our cleanups is a sentimental one. Hamilton Avenue is where we did our first cleanups in March of 2021 (see photos below from 3 different cleanups that took place that month), and it’s where we held our Make a Difference Day cleanups in 2021 and 2022. We do cleanups in other neighborhoods, and we want to expand into areas where we haven’t done cleanups yet, but we will always have a place in our hearts for Hamilton Ave.

Since this is a popular day for service, there are many other worthy organizations with volunteer opportunities. Whether you volunteer with Waste-Free Dayton, or another organization, we encourage to devote some time this month and future months to helping others and working towards a healthier and more sustainable future.
