Earth Day, Our City, and You

The theme for Earth Day in 2022 is Invest In Our Planet. Actions that we take and decisions we make on a daily basis ultimately have an effect on our planet. We should also be thinking about how our actions and decision affect our neighborhoods and cities. Earth Day is one week away, on Friday, April 22, and today also marks the halfway point of Earth Month. For this post, we wanted to share some resources, ideas, and events you can join to help invest in our city.

Sierra Club Ohio’s Plastic-Less April

The Sierra Club Ohio Chapter has a schedule of events going on across the state this month, as well as a downloadable Plastic-Less April calendar that contains tips for each day for living more sustainably. It’s a similar concept to Plastic-Free July, which we participated in last year and plan to do again in 2022.

Earth Day’s 52 Ways to Invest In Our Planet

The EarthDay.org website contains a plethora of resources and ideas to help us invest in our planet and in our city. Some of these things you may already be doing, but you can also think about how you can get others to join you. Here are some of the ideas:

  • Buy Local Food

  • Go Pesticide Free

  • Compost

  • Pick Up Trash While You Run

Many of the ideas listed can have a direct impact on our environment locally, like keeping food waste out of landfills, preventing trash from entering waterways, and supporting local farms. You can find the full list here.

Participate in Earth Day Events

We take the stance that Earth Day should be every day. A global day of awareness is a great opportunity however to bring new people into a movement and to mobilize volunteers to tackle huge projects. Waste-Free Dayton is holding its second annual Earth Day litter cleanup event on Earth Day from 2-4 pm in the Historic Inner East Neighborhood of Dayton. Hamilton Avenue is a highly traveled road running parallel to an abandoned railroad with an overgrown embankment. It is a magnet for litter, which brings WFD back to this site multiple times per year. If you would like to sign up for the event you can find more details in our Calendar on our Events page, or you can sign up through the Living City Project volunteer page.

The day after Earth Day, on Saturday, April 23rd, we are participating in I Love West Dayton’s cleanup event, Earth Day Dayton, from 10 am to 1 pm in the Westwood Neighborhood (3730 Delphos Ave, Dayton). You can sign up for that event also through the Living City Project page. Waste-Free Dayton will have a table set up at the event for volunteer check-in.

Finally, we are really excited about our fundraising event on Tuesday, April 19 at Yellow Cab Tavern with The Pizza Bandit. It’s a charity bingo night benefiting Waste-Free Dayton. We will receive a portion of the proceeds from food and drink purchases as well as the proceeds from the bingo cards. The event starts at 6:30 pm and is scheduled to go to 8 pm. We will also be selling our shirts and magnets, and doing a 50/50 raffle. You can find more details on the Facebook event.

Hopefully you found this information useful, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!
